the feelings vegetables evoke

This morning I made a vegetable platter to take to Sunday dinner with our friends. Yesterday when the fancy struck me to take this particular food I was pretty excited. I've been craving some raw vegetables with ranch dressing for a while now. Then I got really excited because Aunt June always makes the relish tray for parties. She's the party queen! I channelled her relish tray expertise and remembered that I needed a can of olives. One of my first memories of a Johnson party is putting olives on all ten of my fingers. You can bet Aunt June brought those olives.
My platter, although not in a cool Tupperware one like Aunt June's, looked so good. I couldn't wait to dip the first baby carrot in some ranch dressing--even though I know I didn't make the same creamy recipe that Aunt June always makes. I felt so good about my vegetable tray. I felt like I was one step closer to being as amazing at party food as my aunt! Then I looked at my one measly plate of vegetables. If I were really like my Aunt June I wouldn't be bringing only vegetables. I would also be bringing jello, that really good chocolate pudding that Jason likes, the yummiest rolls ever, a huge plate of cookies, crab salad, and the main dish. Not even close. I'm nowhere near as good as my aunt at feeding mass numbers of people. Someday.
I really only get homesick when I think of what I'm missing out on. I know some time in November there's going to be a vegetable tray party without me.

I don't know about being the party queen? I just bring what your mother tells me to bring.(jk)

I'm honored that I made your blog.

We thought this was going to be a story of how after you brought your DELICIOUS veggie tray, Jonah tried to eat 6 olives at once and immediately had to spit them all out. It was a beautiful tray...and obviously a hit because all the veggies were gone by the end.

At Thanksgiving, I'll eat 10 olives just for you.
